π§ How to Use These Tools
Every game and simulation on Archi-Civil follows the same handful of patterns. Learn them once here and every one of the 60+ tools on the site should feel immediately familiar β no page-by-page relearning required.
The controls on the left
Every tool has a panel of sliders (occasionally a dropdown) on the left, or stacked on top on a phone. Each one is live β drag it and the result updates instantly, with no "calculate" button to press. The number next to each label always shows the slider's current value in real units (metres, kN, degrees, Β°C β whatever the quantity actually is).
The result on the right
The panel on the right redraws live as you move the sliders. Below the drawing you'll usually find a row of key numbers, and often a coloured status banner:
These colours are consistent across every tool on the site, from a beam check to a kitchen layout.
Games vs. Simulations β what's the difference?
Simulations ("β¦ Explorer") are open-ended: there's no single right answer, just a real formula responding to your inputs so you can build intuition for how a quantity behaves. Push every slider to its extreme and see what happens β that's the point.
Games set you a specific target β usually stated in a highlighted "π― Goal" box β and score whether you've met it. A few games (like Blueprint Detective or ArchStyle Master) are short multiple-choice quizzes instead of sliders: read the scenario, pick an answer, get an explanation either way.
The "Method" and honesty boxes
Below the result, every tool has two boxes worth reading once:
The grey "honesty box" states exactly what was independently verified before the tool was published β often a cross-check against a completely separate method (a different formula, a numerical simulation, or hand calculation), not just "we checked the formula again." If a real error was caught and fixed during that process, it says so.
The "Method" section underneath cites the actual source β a standard (TBDY 2018, Eurocode, ACI, AASHTOβ¦), a named researcher, or a textbook β for every formula the tool uses. A "Scope" note at the very bottom is equally important: it states plainly what the tool does not model, so you know its limits before relying on it.
Six things true of every tool on this site
- No formula is published without a traceable source.
- Every calculation has been independently cross-checked β usually in Python, often by a second, genuinely different method β before publishing.
- Where a coefficient varies too much between sources to be defensible, the tool says so and asks you to supply it, rather than guessing.
- Sliders always show real values in real units β never an abstract 0β100 scale.
- Nothing requires an account, a click-through tutorial, or a manual β if a control isn't self-explanatory from its label, that's treated as a bug.
- A "Scope" note tells you what the tool intentionally leaves out, so you know when you need a fuller analysis instead.
